Map reading course

Some HX runners have recently expressed an interest in becoming more familiar with map reading.  I recently attended an excellent map reading course which started at the National Trust Car Park at Coombe Hill, near Chequers.  David Jackson runs a local walking group called Chiltern Walks and regularly runs this course at a cost of £10 for the day.  The next one takes place on Saturday, 3rd September, and is highly recommended.

 

Briefly, the course covers:

  • Basic map reading and navigation
  • Planning and following a route on the map
  • What to do when lost
  • Compass reading

Local orienteering events

For those HX runners who would like to test out their map reading skills, my orienteering club has a few local events in the Wycombe area this Autumn.

 

Saturday 24th September – Bradenham (where we have our XC race.

 

Saturday 22nd October – Kings Wood (Tylers Green)

 

Saturday 26th November – Black Park

 

These events are designed for those trying orienteering for the first time, or for those looking to improve.  There are a range of courses available, with varying lengths and a range of navigational difficulty.  They cost £6, for which you get an accurate map of the area, and chip timing.  And there will be plenty of advice available for newcomers.  No need to pre-enter, just turn up between 10am and 11am – so ideal for attending after parkrun.

Red Lion at Bradenham on Thursday 8th September 2016 – 6:30PM (Earlier Start Time)

The next pub run will be from the Red Lion at Bradenham on Thursday 8th September 2016.

Please note that we it will be a prompt 18.30 departure as sunset is at 19.33 .

The run will follow our cross country route which I think is about 9km and it will give everyone a chance to understand where the marshalling points are.

We have a 4.4 mile walk, and 6 mile run and an 8+ a bit run! All are across varied terrain and Sam & Gillian really hope you enjoy the routes as we have had great fun planning them and include walks and runs we do regularly from our home.
As Sam’s knee has gone again, he will lead the walk rather than the longer Run, so I do need some helpers to do a recce of the 8+ route in advance. I would also like another couple of volunteers to do the 6 mile route with me. If you can help with this and are prepared to be a leader on the 18th, please can you contact me gillian.alexander@hilton.com. To avoid clashing with the relay, I was going to suggest either Friday 12th evening or Sat 13th or Sunday 14th at 9am or a time to suit you, (earlier not an issue!)
