We have kindly been invited to run from the Runners’ Retreat shop in West Street, Marlow on Wednesday 24th September. Meeting there at 7:00pm and leaving soon afterwards for a run around the town. The run distances will be around 4 miles and 6 miles and be led at a very sociable pace with lots of regrouping and so will be suitable for anyone, whether they normally run on a Wednesday or any other club evening. I’m sure that it will make a pleasant change for you from running around the streets of Wycombe. Please note that car park charges apply until 7:00pm but it won’t cost you much for the short period up until then, or you can try and find some on street parking nearby.
After the run Matt and Brian, who run the shop, have invited us back to the shop for drinks, snacks and the chance to purchase running shoes and other items at reduced prices in a sale exclusively for us, so please bring money or a credit card with you or you could miss out on a bargain. Helen is also going to be there and she has told me that she will only be too happy to give any of you ladies advice about choosing suitable Sports Bras and measure you to get the correct fit. There is a changing room at the shop where she can do this and you can also use this to try anything on before buying.

Matt and Brian of Runners’ Retreat, Marlow are kindly organising another evening Orienteering/Treasure Hunt run for us, similar to those they have put on for us over the last couple of year’s but starting from a different location. This will be on Thursday 18th September and we will be meeting at the shop at 6:15pm to leave there at 6:30pm to drive up to Danesfield School for the run. As mentioned a while ago, Trevor Hunter will be taking a photo of club member’s to replace the out of date (2005) one that hangs in the bar area of the Judo Centre, on Tuesday 9th September. Please try to be there and wear your red Handy Cross Runners T shirt or vest for the picture. If you haven’t got one, you have plenty of time to purchase one from Linda. The photo will be taken shortly after 7:00pm (so don’t be late) and Trevor is hoping to use the grass bank at the edge of the Buckmaster Road Recreation Ground (where we sometimes do interval training near John Lewis’s) as the location if the weather is fine. Otherwise it will be taken inside the Judo Centre.
Thanks to all those who came to The Chequers at Wheeler End last Thursday. There were about 45 of us with 32 eating afterwards. Thanks again to Meg Knight for organising the evening, I think that’s the third year in a row and thanks as always to Nick Martin, Debbie Jones, Mike Hollis, Penny Cutler and Jacqueline Ing for assisting with the runs.
The next and last of the pub runs will be taking place on Thursday, 4th September, starting at 6.45pm (please note the slightly earlier start time) from The Harrow in Hughenden Valley and is being organised by Nick Martin.
Runs and walk
There will two runs of 6 and 8 miles and a walk of about 4 miles, which will be led by Martin Dean.
If anybody would like to assist with helping Nick recce the runs and help with shepherding runners on the night can you please contact Nick at firstname.lastname@example.org Several of his usual helpers are away on holiday, so he will need a couple of extra volunteers.
Also, because of the fading light, can you please note that it is important for this event that you are able to complete the runs in about an hour and a half. It would also be advisable to bring head torch if you are uncomfortable running cross country in twilight.
Food and drink
Nick has arranged a ‘Handy Cross Runners’ short menu for the night, which is attached to this email, all meals are £7.00 per person. He has agreed with the pub that they will have all food orders by Tuesday evening, 2nd September, so please let me know if you wish to eat after the runs/walk, together with your choice from the menu email@example.com
There will still be an opportunity to order food after this time and you will not be obliged to pay for food that you have ordered if you are unable to attend, but it will be helpful for all concerned if you can order by Tuesday evening.
Parking will be in the car park and grass verge opposite the pub, not in their main car park at the rear of the pub, but please take instructions when you arrive.
The preference of the majority of you who replied to me is to hold The Gerry Grosse Trophy 5k Handicapped race at the new athletics track at Little Marlow on Wednesday 3rd September at 7:00pm. I’m not able to be there, so John Peerless will organise the proceedings on the evening. He will need help with the lap counting and time keeping, so if you are not planning on running and are available to help then please let him firstname.lastname@example.org know.
The Gerry Grosse Trophy is awarded each year to the most improved runner over the 5k distance following the Summer 5k Series.
If you’d like to take part, please let me know before this coming weekend so that I can work out a target time for you. You will need to have done at least two 5k’s (or parkruns) this year to qualify. You will also need to bring £1 with you on the evening to pay for using the track. Alan Hewson, the coach for Speed Demons, who have sole use of the track on Wednesday evenings, has kindly agreed to let us share it with them on this occasion as long as proper track etiquette is observed.
The winner of the trophy will be the person making the most improvement on the target time set. He/she will get to keep it for the next year and will also be presented with a small engraved plaque/shield to keep forever. The person of the opposite sex making the most improvement will also be given an engraved plaque/shield to keep. To give everyone a chance of winning something we will give bottles of wine to:-
The person achieving the quickest time.
The person who enjoys the experience of running the 5k distance for the longest period of time.
The person coming closest to the target time I set.
The person showing the greatest deficit between the time I set and that actually taken.
The target times will not be disclosed beforehand and we reserve the right to change/withhold any of the prize categories in the case of someone obviously not trying hard enough just to try and win a bottle of wine.
Thanks to all those who came to the pub run last Thursday at the Fleur de Lis in Stokenchurch. There were about 50 of us in total with 35 eating afterwards. As per usual, there will two runs of about 7 and 9 miles and a walk of around 4.0 miles
For the benefit of those who have not taken part before, the runs are 90% cross country and to make sure that we are back in time to eat, we have to get around the distances in an hour and forty five minutes at the most.
Food and drink
Meg has arranged for the pub to do a barbeque (as previously years) at £8.00 per person, which will include the usual burger, chicken and sausage together with chips and various salads.

If anybody would like a vegetarian option, please let me know and we can see what the pub have to offer.
